Hello everyone,

Has anyone had any problems with their eyes since being on Methotrexate, Prednisolone or Sulfasalaxine?

I noticed I had a burst blood vessel in my left eye a few days ago where there appeared to be a red blotch in the white of my eye - I have had this before. Then tonight, another one has appeared in my right eye!

Any comments would be appreciated, many thanks,

Please go to a and e/ the eye hospital

Or, get into see a optician today and have them refer you. The one at Asda is fine!

The prednisone has got the potential to change the pressures in your eyes.
In severe cases it can lead to blindness.
So
You must be checked-PLEASE

I hope you pop on here today and see this.

Hi Linda - I echo Jenni's comments - please get this checked out. You can never be too careful with your eyes - it could be nothing but you don't know that until you've had it checked by a specialist.

Hello everyone,

Thank you all for your help and kind words, much appreciated. I forgot to ask to be notified of any replies before I sent it so did not know until I have checked on here now that I have three replies!

Have been to opticians and he does not appear to be unduly concerned - he did refer me to doctors in January to get my blood pressure checked as he noticed that the pressure in my eyes was high - even referred me to hospital eye department to get my eyes checked - they discharged me after first visit!

I have been on Prednisolone for over two years and have been reducing the dosage since July - noticing a deterioration though. As it happens, I have a hospital appointment on Friday so will make sure I get this all checked out.

Thanks again for all your help, it has made me realise just how much I just "put up" with things.

Hi Linda - glad that the optician was not too concerned, hope your appt is good. Prednisolone is a steroid isn't it? I thought we weren't supposed to be on those for more than a few weeks - are you on other dmards too?

When I was on steroids they told me that they were just to tide me over until the MTX and HDX kicked in which can take up to 3 months, and I did notice that my symptoms got worse when I finished the steroids, but then gradually, oh so gradually, things improved as the dmards did their job. However, I know that others on the forum have found that they needed to change their dmards or even move onto biologics before they got to that point, so it's different for everyone. But you shouldn't have to just "put up" with pain, and long-term steroids are not good news as they can cause other problems. Hope you have a good appt at the hospital

Hi Linda

Hope all goes well with your appointment with your consultant later this week. Sylvia is spot on about the steroids, they really are only to be used until the other drugs eventually kick in, my consultant hates them with a vengeance as they only masks the symptoms and in no way controls joint damage. If the dmards are dealing with the RA adequately you may be considered for the biologics. It may be worth having a word with one of the ladies on the Nras helpline before you go on Friday.
